Conference addresses recycling industry challenges

In recent months, the recycling industry has faced significant challenges as China accepts far fewer recyclables. Materials must now be less contaminated and additional markets must be found.

The 32nd Southeast Recycling Conference (SERC) and Recycle Florida Today Winter Summit, both held last month in Orlando, addressed those challenges.[1] More than 40 exhibitors[2] offered innovative as well as time-tested recycling solutions at the event’s trade show.

Oscar Vargas (Director) and Jessica Wright (waste management expert and Project Manager) represented ecoPreserve. Sessions they attended explored the evolving changes in recycling programs, allowing more flexible plastics and sealed products. In the future, drone delivery is likely to have an impact on packaging. Cardboard won’t suffice in all-weather environments.

Reusable packaging programs are now seen as a possible trend. For example, in pilot programs today ice cream may be purchased in metal containers that are sent back to the manufacturer. A similar strategy is being tested with household cleaning products.

AWARE of CDC and NIH guidelines

The Baseline Property Condition Assessments described in ASTM E2018-15 do not specify consideration of infectious disease transmission concerns. In a pandemic and post-pandemic environment, that inspection and documentation is essential.
