OCCC earns record-setting gold award

Orange County Convention Center Achieves LEED Gold Certification
The largest center in the world to receive this certification!

The U.S. Green Building Council, represented by Kimberly Lewis, joined Mayor Teresa Jacobs to award Orange County Convention Center’s (OCCC) North/South Concourse with LEED® Gold Certification for Existing Buildings, Operations and Maintenance (LEED EBOM).  With a footprint at just under three million square feet, OCCC is the largest convention center in the world to achieve this certification.

“We are proud to be part of the Central Florida community that continually demonstrates a commitment not only to the economy but also to the environment,” said Alexa Stone, President of ecoPreserve – Building Sustainability, the consulting firm who led the project.  “LEED EBOM Certification is a comprehensive, data-driven approach to sustainable operations based on resource conservation, cost reduction, and continuous improvement.  The process requires broad participation and would not have been a success without the support of Orange County staff and sustainability team, OCCC leadership, suppliers, service contractors and community sustainability leaders.  A special thanks to the ecoPreserve Team, headed up by Jeff Benavides, and including Robert Carter, Jessica Wright, interns Alexandra Rimler, Greg Norris, and our Advisory Board.”

The OCCC project earned 66 LEED points in 7 categories and includes the following accomplishments:

  • Reduction of potable water consumption by 17% below baseline
  • Demonstration of 37% more energy efficient operation than the average Convention Center in the U.S. based on the EPA data
  • Lowering single car commutes by 20% through the use of public transit, carpooling, and environmentally preferred vehicles
  • Recycling and diverting 60% of the total waste stream away from the landfill
  • Procurement of sustainable and non-hazardous cleaning chemicals, furniture, and electronics
  • Establishing the US Green Building Council Central Florida’s Green Destination Orlando (GDO), a community-driven sustainability initiative supported by premier hospitality & tourism partners and participants

“Not only is the Orange County Convention Center setting a standard in the industry, they are also adding value and transparency to the green meeting and convention industry, which is increasingly demanding venues with credible 3rd party sustainability certification”, said Jeff Benavides, who served as ecoPreserve’s Senior Project Manager.

AWARE of CDC and NIH guidelines

The Baseline Property Condition Assessments described in ASTM E2018-15 do not specify consideration of infectious disease transmission concerns. In a pandemic and post-pandemic environment, that inspection and documentation is essential.

Buildings open to the public must comply with local regulations. For best results and greatest public acceptance, any planning for building repairs and maintenance should not overlook current CDC and NIH guidelines.

Knowledge of water systems can bring further savings while averting water waste. It can all be part of an assessment which might otherwise overlook water fixtures and irrigation schedules.

How should a facility be ASSESSED?

A thorough facility assessment finds the issues - on the surface or below - which have a potential negative impact on the building. That brings the facility to meet building codes. Beyond that, the assessment proactively addresses the deficiencies not covered by code.

The occupants of a building benefit as the assessment reveals conditions having a potential impact on their health or safety. The assessment must not overlook those conditions, nor fail to consider the frequency and duration of occupant visits.
