Illinois was the top state for LEED-certified buildings in 2018

In 2018, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) certified more than 468 million square feet of green building space in the Top 10 States for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The highest-ranked state, Illinois, attained LEED certification for 172 projects.[1] Among qualifications to certified, buildings must be energy efficient, use less water, limit their carbon footprint, and be affordable for the business or family occupants. As a result, construction to LEED standards improves indoor environmental quality which is healthier for occupants, while being lower-cost to maintain.

Details available

This was the ninth year that the USGBC published the list, which includes institutional as well as commercial green building projects. Their website[2] provides a beautiful infographic of the Top 10 States, including details of square footage and numbers of projects completed.
