City of Orlando: Green Works Community Action Plan

Green Works OrlandoecoPreserve President Alexa Stone was acknowledged as an active contributor to Mayor Buddy Dyer’s Green Works Orlando Community Action Plan.

Mayor Dyer launched Green Works Orlando in 2007, and the City of Orlando has since made significant progress in promoting environmental stewardship and encouraging agencies, businesses and residents to improve environmental sustainability in Orlando.

Some of the early successes include:

  • Achieving more than $1 million in annual energy savings
  • Expanding the Downtown LYMMO bus circulator and building the SunRail
  • Completing eight LEED-certified municipal buildings, including the first newly constructed LEED-certified NBA arena in the country
  • Performing energy efficiency retrofits to 1,200 houses
  • Planting 10,000 trees and establishing four community gardens.

In October 2012, Mayor Dyer launched the creation of the Green Works Community Action Plan, challenging the Orlando community to continue on the path towards becoming the green city capital of the southeast United States.

The Green Works Community Action Plan identifies ambitious goals and actionable strategies in seven distinct focus areas:

Green Works

Goals were established for the year 2040 and interim targets for 2018.

ecoPreserve president Alexa Stone was one of twenty leaders appointed by Mayor Dyer to a Task Force charged with developing the Community Action Plan and developing recommendations on how to achieve Orlando’s sustainability goals. During the plan development process, the Task Force met on five separate occasions to review goals, prioritize strategies for each focus area, identify appropriate implementation plans and make final recommendations to the Mayor. The Task Force is also anticipated to play a role in the implementation of the recommended strategies.

ecoPreserve’s continued leadership and commitment to the creation of a green economy in the City of Orlando aligns perfectly with the Green Works Community Action Plan, and we look forward to our contribution in making the City Beautiful one of the greenest cities in America.
